WINTALK VERSION 1.26
by Glen Daniels
Copyright (c) 1996, ELF Communications, Inc.
---*---
WHAT'S NEW THIS VERSION:
-------------------------
The main new feature this time around is a simple, but functional,
SETUP PROGRAM! Now you can install WinTalk just by running
SETUP.EXE... no more copying files, checking for CTL3D, etc....
Speaking of CTL3D - the 32-bit version of WinTalk no longer uses it.
NT3.51 and Windows-95 both automatically provide a 3d look without
using CTL3D32, and installation problems ("I can't find the DLL!")
were cropping up, so I took it out. The 16-bit version still uses
CTL3D, but it will be automatically installed by SETUP if you're
running Windows 3.1 and you don't already have it.
Also, as per usual several bugs were fixed.
NOTE FOR WINDOWS-95 USERS:
--------------------------
If you use Norton Navigator, please check out the WinTalk web page
for important information about a NNav bug which may affect WinTalk!
Welcome
-------
Welcome to WinTalk! This file contains installation instructions,
last-minute information, new features, and bugs fixed. The main
WinTalk documentation has all been converted to on-line help, and can
be accessed from within WinTalk by selecting "Help" from the icon menu.
Contents:
---------
1.0 Installation instructions
2.0 Using WinTalk
3.0 WinTalk "Pro"
4.0 New features
5.0 Bugs fixed
1.0 Installation instructions
------------------------------
To use WinTalk, you must have a WINSOCK.DLL that operates with your
windows TCP/IP networking stack. For more information on this,
please contact your network vendor.
You've already taken the first step towards installing WinTalk by
unpacking the .zip file and reading this README. The .zip file
contains the following files:
README.1ST - This file
SETUP.EXE - The WinTalk installer
WTALK16.EXE - The 16-bit executable
WTALK32.EXE - The 32-bit executable
WTALK16.HLP - The 16-bit help file
WTALK32.HLP - The 32-bit help file
CTL3D.DLL - Microsoft's 3d control DLL
As of version 1.26, WinTalk has a setup program! Just run "SETUP"
(via Program Manager for Win3.1 / NT, or the Taskbar's "Run..." for
Win95) and WinTalk will ask you for a destination directory for the
executable + help file. The setup program will automatically
determine your windows version, and which programs to copy.
2.0 Using WinTalk
------------------
[Win 3.1, Win NT, Win32s]
You can use the Program Manager File->New command to create an icon
for WinTalk in an appropriate Program Manager group. Please make
sure to select the appropriate version (WTALK16 / WTALK32). If you
place WinTalk in the "Startup" group, it will come up each time you
start windows, and you will always be able to receive talk requests
if you desire. [NOTE: This technique will sometimes fail if WinTalk
ends up loading before your winsock stack has connected you to the
net. In this case, you'll get a startup error (usually error
#10091). If this happens, refer to the documentation for your
winsock stack to find out how to auto-load programs after a
connection has been established.]
When you start WinTalk, the smiley-face icon will appear at the
bottom of your screen. If you click the icon with the left mouse
button, you'll get the WinTalk system menu, from which you may access
all of the program's functionality. See the on-line help for more
information.
[Windows 95]
- Option 1:
When you start WinTalk, it will immediately minimize itself to the
taskbar. To use it, *right*-click on the WinTalk taskbar pane, which
will bring up the WinTalk system menu. See the on-line help for more
information.
- Option 2:
If you add the line "tray_only = yes" to your WINTALK.INI file,
WinTalk will not appear in the normal taskbar area - instead it will
run as a small icon in the tray area. To access the menu, simply
click on the tray icon. See "new features" for more info.
3.0 WinTalk "Pro"
------------------
In addition to this FreeWare version, WinTalk now has a commercial
brother, WinTalk Pro. WinTalk Pro is available for $20 from ELF and
includes:
- Call Answering : An answering machine for your computer! The
icon's eyes flash to let you know you have messages, and you can
initiate a talk to anyone who's left you a message with the click
of a button.
- Call Screening : You can now set a group of "VIPs" in your hotlist,
and only those users will ring through to you. Everyone else will
get your choice of a refusal, a "not logged in" notification, or
your answering machine.
- Your very own WinTalk floppy in the mail (should you desire it -
you will also be able to obtain WinTalk Pro via FTP)
- Free copies of all maintenence releases of WinTalk Pro through v2.0.
- A copy of WinTalk Pro v2.0 (once it's released) for only $5
- The warm fuzzy feeling of supporting the development of software
you like!
For complete ordering information, see the on-line help or the
WinTalk web page (http://www.elf.com/elf/wintalk.html).
